ikāraḥ puruṣaḥ smṛtaḥ
vakāraḥ śaktiḥ amṛtaṃ
melanaṃ śiva ucyate

Siva = शं (Sam) +   इ (i) + व (va)
शं Sam stands for eternal calm and quietude;   इ (i) stands for Self and va stands for Shakti and everlasting life. Therefore the combination should be adored in the form of Siva.
